Most AI categories don't have an owner -- yet.
AI search hasn't picked most of its category winners yet, but the winners AI engines pick are becoming difficult to dislodge.
According to a new Semrush study , the findings are timely, consequential, and immediately useful. Across 1,094 US categories tracked inside ChatGPT through the first half of 2026, only 15.2% had a clear winner. Established owners of the category, meanwhile, held first place in 90.4% of month-to-month comparisons. One nuance matters: here, ownership means consistent brand mentions across five related prompts, not citations, sentiment, or purchase outcomes.
Winning an individual prompt is only a single snapshot. Topic ownership means appearing consistently across the questions buyers ask as they define a problem, compare options and make a decision. Most categories currently remain unsettled, but the brands establishing a meaningful lead are already becoming difficult to unseat.
The lesson underneath the numbers is simple. Lasting visibility can't be manufactured through isolated prompt optimization. A company has to become consistently associated with a defined area of expertise, across multiple questions and at every stage of the buyer's consideration.
The opportunity isn't to "rank in ChatGPT" for a handful of prompts. It's to build enough real authority around a strategically important topic that your company becomes part of the answer wherever and whenever the buyer enters the conversation via an AI engine.
That association is built through a coherent public evidence layer: clear messaging, consistent positioning, credible expert voices, customer proof, third-party validation and genuinely useful owned content. That's work that an AEO or GEO tool alone cannot do.
Most categories are still unsettled. The brands doing that work now are the ones the answer keeps naming later.
Call it the ant and the grasshopper, retold for AI search and AI visibility. The ants are storing up credibility while the field is still open. When the categories harden, and they will, the grasshoppers will find every answer already given to someone else.
