GPT-4o: Your Secret Weapon for Learning, Creating and Mastering New Skills

Carmen Hughes

Vibrant digital illustration showcasing AI applications with a central friendly robot symbolizing GPT-4o.

Have you ever wished you could have a personal tutor for your child, a master chef, or a handyman at your fingertips 24/7? Well, good news, you can have all of these and more. And that’s because of the magical capabilities of GPT-4o.

In our last blog post, we explored seven mind-blowing ways to unleash the magic of GPT-4o. But guess what? There's even more magic that it can do. So buckle up, and let's explore more ways GPT-4o can rock your world.

1. Turbocharge Your Child's Potential with the Ultimate Pocket Tutor

This application of GPT-4o is fascinating for students and parents alike. Imagine your children can get personalized tutoring in subjects like math, science, history, or English tailored to their learning pace and style. Moreover, a student can instruct the AI model to make the tutoring fun, engaging or even quirky. A personal tutor can also double as a virtual homework buddy. This feature alone will transform the homework routine into more engaging learning.

Imagine a typical student sitting down to tackle their homework. It's 10 pm on a Sunday, and young Maddy stares at a blank Word document, trying to figure out how to write a 1,200-word essay on the Pythagorean Theorem. After all, what topic could be more exciting than the Pythagorean Theorem? Anxiety and writer’s block are setting in, but then Maddy remembers hearing about GPT-4o. With a few easy prompts, GPT-4o breaks down the complex Greek concept for Maddy, suggests a few engaging real-world examples, and even provides a clever opening line for her essay. Suddenly, the essay seems manageable. Maddy smiles, her fingers flying across the keyboard as ideas pour out. GPT-4o saved the day, and now she can get some needed sleep.

A personal tutor is one of the best ways for students to understand any subject better. GPT-4o as a personal tutor levels the playing field. Families with limited resources generally can't afford a professional tutor. GPT-4o makes it within reach of most students, who can access a virtual tutor right from their pocket.

With GPT-4o, learning becomes an adventure. Students can explore subjects in ways that spark their curiosity and make even the most complex or tedious topics feel approachable. Now, students can turn homework into an engaging, personalized experience. Parents will be thrilled that their kids have immersed themselves in learning and are earning better grades.

2. Artists Go from 0 to 60 with GPT-4o
With the widespread adoption of AI, many people have predicted a doomsday outcome for several industries and professions. Creative artists typically top the list of the most vulnerable. Novel AI image tools like OpenAI's DALL·E, Midjourney, and Google's Gemini AI generate vivid, lifelike, highly imaginative, custom images for businesses and people. Arguably, the availability of these free or affordable tools has indeed collapsed the revenues of online stock image sites like Getty Images and Adobe Stock.

Artists, however, can couple their unique, innate talents with GPT-4o to turbocharge their ideas and work. Thanks to GPT-4o, artists can explore new artistic techniques and styles with an efficiency never seen before. Using a few descriptive prompts, they can examine concepts for charcoal drawings, paintings, sculptures, digital art, and many more modalities. GPT-4o can generate a range of tailored concepts in seconds, helping artists break through any creative blocks – just like the writer’s block many of us less artistically gifted people suffer with.

Let's examine a hypothetical example. Fashion Runway is a long-running, streaming series where one dozen fashion design artists compete to win. Each week, the show's judges unveil a new assignment. The design brief requires that each artist conceptualize and sketch one or two outfits. Artists must find the perfect materials (color, texture and weight) to create their designs. From there, they have to drape, cut the fabric, stitch pieces together, fit them on a model, refit it and finish tailoring by hand and machine. After every assignment, judges send someone home. The contest continues until three competitors remain, who then compete in a grand finale to win the prize.

Consider what GPT-4o could do to help these particular artists (assuming the usage of an AI tool was even allowed). The fashion designer could share some of their previous designs with GPT-4o, discuss their overall style and design aesthetics, share their favorite fashion designers with whom they align closely, and discuss the assigned brief and vision for it as well as deadlines. GPT-4o can steer the artist in the right direction and away from problematic materials, which could delay completion or result in an unattractive garment. GPT-4o could also recommend accessories to create or use, as well as hair and makeup to complete the look. Stepping away from this designer contest and into real life, any fashion designer can now collaborate with GPT-4o. In this human and AI tool collaboration, a creative artist can accelerate their ideas from concept to completion and collapse the time and costs from start to finish. If the fashion designer were creating a collection, they could save on time and materials and meet challenging deadlines.

Any artist, no matter the medium, can collaborate with GPT-4o, prompting it for custom tutorials and lessons on various artistic techniques, designs, workarounds, advice, etc. GPT-4o can provide step-by-step guidance tailored to an artist’s skill level, dependencies, goals, etc. But it doesn't stop there. With GPT-4o's visual and audio capabilities, artists can receive feedback and recommendations for improvement. This interactive feedback loop can help artists plan and execute a single project, cohesive collection, or series of works.

3. Conquer Your DIY Disasters: GPT-4o to the Rescue
Do any of your past DIY projects haunt you? For example, you told your wife not to worry because installing that new Japanese toilet would be a cinch—until it wasn't. Days later, the bathroom was a mess, the toilet was unusable – and there was a new leak.

How about when you decided to install a new bathroom vanity, which you knew, before even starting the project, that ripping out the old vanity would likely damage the walls? This project would require some new sheetrock – something you’d never done before. That YouTube video you watched several times made it look so easy. Yet after hours of trial and error with mudding the walls and re-mudding them, you stood back to admire your work—only to find that, well, it looked like crap. Ah, the unbridled satisfaction of yet another "honey-do" project.

In hindsight, these DIY disasters might be funny, but no one was laughing at the time – especially "honey." Enter GPT-4o, your new trusty friend and foreman for DIY projects! With GPT-4o, you can get step-by-step instructions, a list of materials for the project, time frames for each step, and real-time troubleshooting advice. Even better, your next remodeling project doesn't end up in the DIY hall of shame (and you don’t end up in the dog house).

4. Bon Appetit! Recreate Instagram-Worthy Dishes with GPT-4o
Everyone's Instagram feed has mouth-watering appetizers, main dishes, desserts and colorful cocktails. IG users and followers inevitably want the recipe to make it at home. Now, with GPT-4o, aspiring chefs, bakers, cooks and even those challenged in the kitchen (you know who you are) can take their culinary skills to the next level.

Snag a picture in your Instagram feed of someone's delicious tiramisu, roasted cauliflower potato soup, mushroom mac n’ cheese, or gnocchi with sage brown butter. Or use your picture from an unforgettable dish at a restaurant. Upload a photo or video of the dish and ask GPT-4o to create the recipe. Describe in your prompt a few known ingredients or apparent flavors or provide the name of the dish or item (i.e., European chocolate poppy seed cake). While not required, providing more details in your prompt will help GPT-4o create a step-by-step recipe, including ingredient lists, cooking instructions, and tips for perfecting the dish. GPT-4o can also give you variations and substitutions to accommodate any dietary preferences or restrictions, making it a versatile tool for any kitchen. Go ahead and customize a recipe by telling GPT-4o that you prefer less oil or sugar, for instance, and it will adjust the recipe to your liking. How cool is that? GTP-4o can be your sous chef, helping you plan an entire menu, dinner party or brunch based on a theme or cuisine. Step aside, Ina Garten!

The sky's the limit for how GPT-4o can make your life simpler, better and more efficient. GPT-4o is more than just an AI tool; it's a game-changer for learning, creating, and tackling life's challenges (even if it’s installing a new toilet). Whether you're a student, artist, DIY enthusiast, or aspiring chef, GPT-4o can improve your life and work. So why wait? Embrace the magic of GPT-4o today and unlock a world of possibilities. Your trusty AI companion is just a prompt away!

AI Gone Rogue: Cautionary Tales of Misuse and Blunders as GPT 5.0 Looms

Cautionary Tales of AI Misuse

GPT5 is coming! When? No one outside of OpenAI knows for now but, according to Business Insider 'sources,' sometime in "mid-2024." So is the timing T-minus 60 days? We'll have to see when GPT 5.0 makes its debut. One glaring shortcoming of the original GPT 3.5 was its wild hallucinations, where it concocted fake statistics, quotes, URLs, non-existent reports, etc. The warning was well known to most: GPT hallucinates.

Let's review some crazy misdeeds that corporations, lawyers, universities, and others committed while harnessing AI. From trying to cut corners in the courtroom to creating AI-generated fake people to deepfakes, organizations and people have been publicly outed for their AI misuse.

Legal Blunders

Legal Beagles Busted: AI Gets Checked in the Courtroom
It’s hard to believe who is hallucinating in this legal tale. Two lawyers, Steven Schwartz and Peter LoDuca, of the law firm Levidow, Levidow, & Oberman were busted big time after submitting judicial opinions filled with bogus quotes, citations and non-existent entities. Worse, they attempted to defend their nonexistent judicial opinions after being called out for their shortcuts. The judge admonished and fined the lawyers and the Levidow law firm, making the lawyers write letters of apology to the six judges referenced in the fake citations.

Lawyer's AI Mishap: Gets Him Suspended and Fired
Last November, attorney Zachariah Crabill faced a double whammy. The Colorado State Bar suspended him for one year, and his law firm fired him after he admitted using ChatGPT to file a motion in civil court. The AI-generated motion cited incorrect and fictitious cases, which Crabill failed to fact-check prior to submitting it earlier that spring. Before a hearing, Crabill discovered that the cases cited were incorrect, yet he chose not to disclose or withdraw the motion to the court. When questioned by the judge, he initially blamed a legal intern but later confessed to relying on ChatGPT. Despite his setback, Crabill believes AI can make legal services more affordable. He has since launched his own firm that advocates for using AI responsibly as a "virtual legal assistant" to help level the playing field for lower-income clients.

Fake Faces, Real Consequences: The Pitfalls of AI-Generated Personas

Tech Conference Exposed: AI-Generated Female Speakers
If you didn’t read about DevTernity, a software coding conference, here’s what transpired. DevTernity’s founder, Eduards Sizovs, was called out by 404 Media for not only being the person feigning as a female coder on Instagram but also concocting a ruse to give the appearance that his organization was a proponent of diversity. The goal was to provide an impression that the slate of speakers was balanced and included women to appeal to panelists and attendees. Rather than making the effort to identify, assess and secure relevant, qualified female speakers and panelists, Sizovs took a shortcut. He relied on AI-generated, fake profiles of female speakers to falsely project that DevTernity’s conference lineup was diverse. The conference imploded, with crucial speakers canceling, damaging the organization’s credibility.

Sports Illustrated's Backlash Edition
Unfortunately, Sports Illustrated (SI) was also busted for misleading readers with dozens of articles. In a cost-saving move, this highly regarded 70-year-old brand used AI to generate stories, but it went further. Futurism uncovered and reported that the magazine published articles under fake author names and AI-generated profile headshots. SI’s owner, The Arena Group, blamed a vendor. Many question its management and quality control, or lack thereof, over the content. Fact-checking was born in the publishing industry, so to be unaware that staff was nonexistent is dubious.

DeepFakes Go Wild

Political Deep Fakes Caught and Shut Down
OpenAI suspended a developer for using ChatGPT to make a personalized chatbot to impersonate a politician running for office. Two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs decided to create a chatbot that mimicked a Democrat hopeful running for president. Upon visiting the politician's website, visitors were shown a disclaimer. However, the super PACs' actions went directly against OpenAI’s public notice that barred people from using ChatGPT’s personalized chatbots to impersonate politicians. Unfortunately, OpenAI’s actions may still not prevent people from using open source tools to create deep fake chatbots for political purposes in the future.

Athletic Director Busted for Pushing Racist Rant Deep Fake of Principal
In April 2024, the Baltimore police arrested a high school athletic director for using AI to create and spread a racist deepfake audio recording impersonating the principal. Police said that the director, Dazhon Darien, retaliated against the principal, Eric Eiswert, for investigating him over suspicious payments submitted. Darien used ChatGPT and Bing Chat to generate the vile fake rant, emailed it to himself and select school staff, posing as a whistleblower, and then watched it go viral. The principal faced threats and needed police protection until experts confirmed the audio was an AI fake. Darien now faces charges for disrupting school operations and stalking the principal in a disturbing case of deepfake revenge slander. As deepfakes begin to take root, we should all be careful not to jump to conclusions and accept a doctored video or recording as the real thing.

AI Fiascos: From Wrongful Arrests to Killer Recipes

Pregnant Mom Arrested Due to Faulty AI-Based Face Recognition Technology
An eight-month pregnant mom hears a knock at her door. She opens it to discover that it's the police, and they are there to arrest her. Her crime? Carjacking. The problem here is that she didn’t commit it. This gross error happened in Detroit when the AI-based facial recognition software inadvertently identified the wrong black woman. In the police department’s defense, the carjacking victim ID’d the pregnant mom from a lineup of six photos. The Detroit Police Department, however, relied on a mugshot in their database and skipped a step of comparing the photo to the pregnant mom’s driver’s license on file. Now, the department faces three lawsuits – all involving mistaken identities.

Pak’nSave AI Recipe Generates a Chlorine Gas-based Libation
What started as a good idea - an AI-powered site that lets people plug in available food ingredients to get a recipe - turned into a hazardous concoction. Pak’nSave Meal-bot combined AI technology with smart, money-saving strategies to help households use their food. To test the AI recipe generator, a reporter entered water, bleach and ammonia as ingredients, and the Meal-bot concocted an “aromatic water mix” recipe. The resulting recipe of chlorine gas, however, triggers coughing, eye and nose irritation, and breathing difficulties. If consumed, it can be fatal. The lesson is that companies must include rules and safeguards within their AI model to protect consumers who may not know better. A simple disclaimer must go further.

Vanderbilt University Apologizes for using ChatGPT to Write Mass-Shooting Condolence
Rather than rely on internal staff to publicly address a mass shooting at another university in Michigan, Vanderbilt University Peabody School decided to rely on AI to create and send a message via a mass email. The communication was factually incorrect, and the message noted that the author had prepared the content using OpenAI's ChatGPT. Vanderbilt University's decision and approach were insensitive because the event involved a human tragedy. Its action put the university in a bad light, calling into question its decision-making and empathy.

Using AI to Do Bad - UnitedHealthcare Deploys Faulty AI to Profit
In an ongoing class action lawsuit, health insurer UnitedHealthcare, knowingly uses an AI algorithm to wrongfully deny elderly patients healthcare owed to them under Medicare Advantage Plans. The insurer systematically overrides physicians’ recommendations to deny elderly patients extended critical care facilities needed. UnitedHealthcare relies on its faulty AI model despite knowing its 90% error rate. The financial scheme enables UnitedHealthcare to collect premiums without paying for the critical healthcare that seniors need. To date, UnitedHealthcare still employs its faulty AI to maximize its profits at the expense of elderly patients.

Navigating the Future of AI: Lessons Learned and the Path Forward
The rise of powerful AI tools has brought excitement and concern. While AI tools will revolutionize most industries and make our lives easier, they also come with significant risks when misused or applied without proper safeguards. The examples we've explored – from lawyers submitting fake cases to deepfakes – highlight the importance of fact-checking AI outputs, implementing robust safeguards, and being transparent about the use of AI in decision-making processes. These cautionary tales teach important lessons. We must commit to AI's responsible development and deployment to harness its power for good while reducing the risks of AI misuse and unintended consequences.

The future of AI is bright, but it's up to all of us to ensure that it's a future we can trust. Let's learn from the mistakes of the past and work together to build an AI-powered world that benefits everyone.

Got truthiness? Why AI bots will become our new arbiter of news

Carmen Hughes

Why is it that everyone questions the validity of today’s “news stories”? For good reason! Today’s news is too slanted, often not fact-checked or increasingly downright false. What happened? If Bill Kovach and Tom Rosensteil’s Principles of Journalism no longer ring true for our society, can artificial intelligence replace media as our new arbiters of truthful news?
